ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
The publication of this catalogue was made possible by the generous
contributions of the donors listed. The primary instigation for the
catalogue originated with the large initial contribution made by Mr.
and Mrs. Lewis B. Williams. A large proportion of the contributions
came from members of The Print Club of Cleveland, but for whose
continuous interest and support the project could not have been ac¬
complished. Unless otherwise indicated, donors are from Greater
Cleveland.

INTRODUCTION
T HIS 150th anniversary exhibition of lithography, showing
its development from its birth until the present day* is the
first exhibition of its size and scope in America comprised entire¬
ly of prints from a single museum. The nucleus of the exhibition
is drawn from a large gift of 390 lithographs generously pre¬
sented by Mr. and Mrs. Lewis B. Williams in recent years. This
is supplemented by outstanding examples from the Museum’s
other collections. Among the numerous superb prints in the
Williams group are many rare specimens of lithographic in¬
cunabula not hitherto represented in the collection.
Lithography* or planographic printing, is the third and
youngest of the three printing methods. It is printing from a
flat surface and herein lies its essential difference from relief
(printing from raised lines) and intaglio (printing from sunken
lines). It was invented in 1798 by Aloys Senefelder of Bavaria*
who, in his efforts to find an inexpensive method to reproduce
the text of his plays, accidentally fell upon a new and revolution¬
ary way of printing.
Lithography is based on the simple chemical principle of the
natural aversion of water and grease and the affinity that the
stone has for both. When a drawing is made with a greasy
crayon on a lithographic stone or especially prepared metal
plate it becomes firmly fixed and even more so after being
washed with a weak solution of nitric acid. The stone is then
moistened with water, and as grease and water repel each other,
the parts drawn upon with the crayon will reject the water and
the undrawn parts will receive it. In passing a roller charged
with greasy ink over the stone the same principle applies—the
greasy ink will adhere to the drawn areas and be repelled by
those that are wet. The final step is taken when a sheet of paper
is placed over the inked stone and both are run through a press.
In 1799 Senefelder received from the Elector Maximilian
Joseph, King of Bavaria, an official fifteen-year privilege of
practicing lithography in Bavaria. In 1809 he was appointed
Inspector of the Royal Lithographic Establishment, a position
which paid him a salary of 1500 florins a year for over twenty
years.
A patent on the process was obtained in England in 1801 in
Senefelder’s name, and in 1803 the first lithographs to be printed
in England, a portfolio of twelve prints. Specimens of Poly-
autography, were published by Philip Andre. These lithographs
are simple linear drawings in crayon or ink on stone and, with
the exception of those by Fiissli and Benjamin West, are by
little known artists.
In Germany Wagenbauer, Reuter, Niedlich, Schinkel,
Quaglio, and Kriehuber were among the earliest artists to
produce lithographs of artistic merit. But from the beginning
in this country lithography was largely put to commercial
uses: first, in the publication of music scores; and then, in the
reproduction of paintings.
It was the artists of France who first appreciated the aesthetic
potentialities of this most flexible, responsive, and autographic
of all the graphic media, and who by their genius, rare intelli¬
gence, sensitive observation, and innate taste developed it into
a fine art. In 1806 one of Napoleon’s generals, Baron Lejeune, an
amateur painter, was impressed by the technique while in
Munich. Upon his return to Paris he succeeded in interesting
Carle Vernet, David, and Denon, and by 1811 Denon’s studio
became a fashionable center of lithography for amateurs. It
remained, however, for Lasteyrie and Engelmann, both trained
in Senefelder’s shop, to arouse a serious interest in lithography.
In 1816 these two men founded separate lithographic establish¬
ments in Paris, where their business prospered. Here Baron
Gros, Carle and Horace Vernet, and Charlet were among the
earliest engaged to draw original designs upon the stone.
In this Golden Age of Lithography, as it was called, many
important painters in France took an active interest in the
process and adapted it to their varied talents. Charlet, Raffet,
Horace Vernet, Bellange, and Gericault found it a sympathetic
medium in which to immortalize the glories of the Napoleonic
era. Delacroix in his brilliantly imaginative illustrations for
Goethe’s Faust and his spirited studies of wild animals; Isabey
in unforgettable seascapes; Deveria in exquisite portraits;
Barye, Calame, Chasseriau, Decamps, and Ingres in a diversity
of achievement realized the possibilities for artistic expression
offered by lithography.
In this period innumerable volumes of travel were published
in France and England. By far the greatest of these was Voyages
pittoresques et romantiques dans Vancienne France , an excellent
survey of landscape lithography, edited by Baron Taylor.
Issued between 1820-1863 in 24 folio volumes and containing
over 2700 lithographs by Eugene Isabey, Ciceri, and many
others from France, and by Harding, Prout, and the gifted
Bonington from England, it is an extraordinary record of the
artistic achievements of lithography of nearly half a century.
In the 1830^ lithographs began to appear in French newspapers.
The weekly journals Caricature and Charivari brought before
the public illustrations by Daumier and “Gavarni,” two of the
most prolific and greatest of lithographers.
Printing presses were soon set up all over Europe, but for the
most part, outside of France, reproductive lithography still
prevailed. One of the exceptions was the Spanish artist Goya,
who produced in 1825, toward the latter part of his life, his
immortal set of four large lithographs of bullfights. The one
German artist of genius and originality of this period was
Adolf Menzel. His magnificent series, Versuche auf Stein mit
Pins el und Schabeisen , in which he used brush and scraper with
such amazing results, is lithography at its best.
After i860 there was a lull in the production of original
lithography throughout all Europe, a decline which lasted until
the last quarter of the 19th century, when the medium was
revived by the great painters of France, led by Degas whose
inquiring mind saw in lithography yet another outlet for his
inexhaustible experiments. Manet, Fantin-Latour, Pissarro,
Redon, Toulouse-Lautrec, Carriere, Cezanne, Renoir, Gauguin,
Puvis de Chavannes, Bonnard, Vuillard, Signac, Forain,
Steinlen, and somewhat later, Matisse, Picasso, Rouault,
Derain, and many others endowed lithography with a painter’s
broadened vision, and through their widely different styles,
highly individual techniques, and experiments with color gave
new life to the medium.
Lithography held fascination for Whistler, too, who, working
in England, produced a goodly number of lithographs, many of
ethereal beauty. Legros, C. H. Shannon, Rothenstein, Brang-
wyn, Copley, Gabain, and other British artists have through
their personal contributions enriched the medium.
In the last decade of the 19th century and on into the 20th,
Germany took part in this renaissance of lithography in the
work of such individualists as Liebermann, Kollwitz, Hofer,
and Grosz.
In 1819 lithography began to come into use in the United
States and between 1820-1850 presses were to be found in all
the large cities of the country; that of Currier & Ives had an
enormous output. Though lithography was used principally for
illustrating books and periodicals and recording historical events
throughout the 19th century, lithographic establishments
occasionally enlisted the services of such distinguished artists
as Rembrandt Peale, Winslow Homer, and G, H* Durrie* The
men responsible, however, for stimulating an interest in artistic
lithography in this country are Joseph Pennell, George Bellows,
Bolton Brown, Albert Sterner, Arthur B* Davies, Childe
Hassam, “Pop” Hart, and others* Since their time the number
of American artists to practice lithography is legion and con¬
tinues to grow. The richness, variety, and vigor of their work
attest to the vitality and adaptability of the medium and to its
success as a potent means of creative expression.
The resources of lithography, however, are boundless and
await the exploration by fresh talent which will put them to new
and different uses in the light of present events and personal
experiences* leona e* prasse
